For sale – Sailing barge Blackthorn (£95,000)

The beautiful 44’ Thames sailing barge Blackthorn is for sale.
Built only in 1993, she offers potential buyers a unique opportunity to own a classically rigged, half-sized spritsail barge which gains admirers wherever she goes.

Blackthorn is heavily constructed of 6mm epoxy coated steel, has a 12.5’ beam a 3’ draft, and is powered by a 120hp British Leyland 5.7 litre engine. This enables her to travel at 6 knots under power.

The main mast and topmast are pitch pine, the sprit is aluminium and the mizzen spars are Douglas fir.
The mainsail and topsail are made of flax, the foresail, 2 staysails and mizzen are terylene. Standing rigging is predominantly galvanised wire.

Blackthorn has a large fisherman’s anchor with 90 fathoms of chain over a traditional windlass – easily operated by one person.

She is a delight to sail and has cruised extensively on the East coast, Thames Estuary and South coast, and is welcomed at Thames Barge matches.

Included in this reluctant sale, will be the ‘barge boat’ – a 10’ rowing dinghy.

Blackthorn can be viewed on her moorings at Iken Cliff, on the Alde Estuary in Suffolk (one mile down river from Snape Maltings).
