Greetings from the Caravan StageBarge "Amara Zee" (launched in 1997). The
Caravan is the non-profit professional theatre company that built it's own
sailing barge in Kingston, Canada. We sail north and south on the east coast
of North America, producing and performing original contemporary theatrical
productions on the deck of the Amara Zee with the audience sitting on the
dock or shore watching the performances. We live on board the ship with a
full company of 18, including actors, dancers, technicians and sailors. We
are looking for a couple of people to work with us for this coming
season--from mid March to the end of November.
I am sending along a note with our current position requirements. If you know of anyone that may fill our needs please have them get in touch with us or pass their names and co-ordinates on to us. We would bring them over to our winter quarters here in St. Petersburg, Florida at the University of South Florida. We would really like to find someone with some barge experience. It would help us out alot to compare notes from "the one side of the Atlantic to the other". Here are the Caravan job postings. Thanks for all your help. Paul Kirby, Artistic Director, Captain. CARAVAN STAGEBARGE--the AMARA ZEE--HAS TWO POSITIONS AVAILABLE FOR THE 2000 SEASON--MARCH TO DECEMBER, TOUR OF THE EAST COAST FROM FLORIDA TO MAINE AND BACK TO FLORIDA. The Caravan StageBarge is a non-profit professional theatre company that tours on its own 90ft Tall Ship, the Amara Zee. The Amara Zee is the Caravan's version of a Thames River Sailing Barge, a complete touring theatrical facility with accommodation for the cast and crew. (See photo and description in ASTA Directory). The Caravan is committed to producing and performing original contemporary theatrical works with social and environmental themes. The shows are staged on the deck of the vessel, in the rigging and on the land surrounding the ship. The audience sits on the shore or dockside and experiences the show unfold all around them. From April to December, the Caravan tours up and down the east coast from Florida to Canada and back south. We winter in Florida for the winter months, December to March, with a winter residency at the University of South Florida in St. Petersburg. For the current season, the Caravan has openings for the following two positions: First Mate, and Engineer. The Amara Zee is a registered pleasure ship under the Ministry of Transport of Canada. As such, we are not required to have ticketed personnel. The First Mate would be responsible for running one watch during all voyages between show ports and oversee all the ongoing maintenance tasks during the duration of season. Minimum Requirements: one year experience (or equivalent) as a First Mate on a vessel comparable to the Amara Zee--90ft and 90tons. The Engineer would be responsible for the maintenance of all the systems on the vessel including: Propulsion Engines--Twin 120hp Perkins Diesels; Generator Engines--Twin 80hp, 32kw 3Phase Perkins/Marathon Diesels; Electrical and Plumbing Systems; Nav Systems; and assist with the maintenance of the Theatre Light and Sound Systems. Minimum Requirements: Definitive experience with all of the above marine systems.
The Caravan StageBarge is a non-profit company that operates as a economic
co-operative. All members of the company are given the opportunity to crew
the ship and work on the theatre.
