THAMES SAILING BARGE “BETULA” |
![]() Thames Sailing Barge Betula: Betula was built in 1924 in Groningen, Holland. She is of steel construction. Her measurements are 78'6" long by 18'6" wide with a draft of 3'6" aft. She is rigged as a staysail barge with a full suit of Duradon sails in good condition. Betula is very unusual in being of modest size for a steel barge, most of the steel built fleet are much larger vessels. In consequence she would make a very good family cruiser, but at the same time has full headroom throughout and will also appeal to potential "charter" barge owners. ![]() ![]() At the moment she can sleep 8 people in two double cabins plus galley/saloon and shower/toilet aft and a fo'cstle with 4 bunks forward. The aft cabin is fitted throughout with solid Oak panelling and cabinet work. The main cargo hold is still unconverted apart from the engine room and would lend itself readily to building additional cabins and a large saloon. ![]() She is powered by a Perkins diesel engine connected by hydraulic drive to a rudder-mounted propellor. The engine also powers a combined 240/120V generator/welding set. There is also a large diesel driven compressor in the engine room for a range of air-driven power tools. Betula is in very sound condition for her age and a recent out-of-water survey is available. She is for sale at £98,000 o.n.o.
