Restoration of the famous Thames Sailing Barge 'CAMBRIA'

What will CAMBRIA used for?
Restoration so the barge may be used for environmental education and sail training

The main aim of the Trust is the preservation and restoration of CAMBRIA to a sailing condition. To achieve this objective the CAMBRIA will take on a more human dimension as a sail training vessel with a concentration on environmental education.

CAMBRIA is currently based at the Dolphin Yard Sailing Barge Museum in Sittingbourne, Kent. In the 18th and 19th century this area was the centre of the Kentish cement and brick making industry, with over 450 million bricks being produced each year. To fuel this enormous demand an armada of Thames sailing barges transferred household refuse from London to the brickfields. The rubbish was sorted to remove the ash and clinker, which was then mixed with brick earth to form the famous Kentish stock brick.

It has been decided that for sound operational and safety reasons, it is essential that an engine is installed. The hold will be converted to accommodate cabins, environmental displays and a lecture area. The original panelled cabin and fo'c'sle will be restored together with the majority of her original features, particularly above deck.
