Restoration of the famous Thames Sailing Barge 'CAMBRIA'

What needs to be done to save CAMBRIA?
To ascertain whether CAMBRIA was still capable of being restored, and also to ensure credibility for the project, a Marine Surveyor was commissioned to study the CAMBRIA in detail. The surveyor was also accompanied by professional barge shipwrights.

Shpwirghts have also provided broad estimates of the cost of the restoration works.


The broad stategy and costings for the restoration of the CAMBRIA are as follows:

Short-term


2002-2003: £5000

Having saved the barge from sinking, the immediate need is to provide protection from the ingress of rainwater, which is a major source of deterioration in the old wooden hulls. The plan is to construct a steel framed roof aboard the lighter, which, with translucent corrugated roofing sheets, will provide protection at a working height and will allow restoration to proceed unhindered.


Medium term


2003/2004: £50,000

Preparation of barge for restoration: power supplies, tools, workshop facilities. Recruitment and establishment of restoration teams.


2004/2005: £200,000

Restoration of the hull of CAMBRIA

Long term
2005/2006 £150,000

Fitting out of vessel, installation of engine and accomodation

We intend to restore CAMBRIA, as near to her original state as possible, depending on the level of funding available.
