S.B. THALATTA

How the Trust is run.

The East Coast Sail Trust is a registered Charity (No. 263100) and as such has to comply with strict conditions laid down by the Charity Commissioners. Chairman of the Trust is Joe Brannigan who is retired after many years working in the London Insurance Market. The Treasurer is Derek Adams, a Chartered Accountant, and he is backed up by Appeal Secretary John Gibbs. Secretarial duties are carried out by Gill Woods, who also maintains contact with all the schools and groups who use the barge.

THALATTA has an unparalleled safety record built up by the late John Kemp and Jane Benham O.B.E., originators of the Trust in its present form. This tradition is carried on by skipper Cyril Varley who has many years experience in coastal shipping and especially in Thames Barges. He is ably assisted by the Mate and the third hand with specific responsibilities for the welfare of the children and on board activities.

All staff, whether working in a voluntary or paid capacity, are committed to maintaining the high reputation of the Trust to the benefit of young people from all sectors of the community.
