SAILING FROM SOUTHEND AREA The lower reaches of the Thames were once teeming with Thames barges on their way to and from the Port of London, once the world's largest and busiest port. Today the lower Thames is much quieter and gives us ample sea room for plenty of sailing. A day sail from Tilbury or Southend could be up river under the Dartford Bridge and towards the Thames Barrier, or perhaps into the Medway river and towards Chatham with its historic dockyard. Essex Marina on the south bank of the River Crouch on Wallasea Island, also provides a good place for a river cruise, either down river towards the seal bank at the mouth of the river or into the river Roach towards Paglesham .
