ALICE of Rochester.

Sailing Barge Alice was built at Wivenhoe in 1954 by Cooks for Hubbocks the paint manufacturers of The Highway, Wapping. Alice was originally built as a lighter, to be rowed, or towed, to and from the River Lea to the Lower Pool of London. She undertook various cargoes; one of the more exciting was operating to the Pirate Radio Ships with stores.
Alice was purchased by Owen Emerson in 1994, and reconstructed fron the forward bulkhead to incorporate a 'Stem', and from the after bulkhead to give the traditional run aft, and Transom stern. This reconstruction has resulted in the magnificent Sailing Barge we own today.
The conversion below decks is totally new, and fitted with a classic varnished pine ceiling and lining.
There is a large saloon area with full headroom, and comfortable seating. The dining area can seat sixteen, and there is a fully equipped bar and galley. Accomodation is in two, and three-berth cabins.
Sailing Barge Alice is based at Lower Upnor on the River Medway, across the River from Chatham Historic Dockyard. Alice is available to charter for private or corporate entertainment on the River Medway, and the traditional East Coast cruising grounds.
