Sailing Barge Cambria

Reg No. 120676
79 Reg. Tons
91.1.x 21.9 x 7.3 ft.

She was built of wood at Greenhithe, by Everards in 1906, and was eventually sold to her then skipper (Bob Roberts) in 1966 who traded her under sail alone until she ended her trading life in 1971 when she was sold to the Maritime Trust.

Cambria is probably the best known sailing barge. She was the last sailing barge to trade under sail alone, as she has never had an engine fitted. Bob Roberts, her skipper, and latterly her owner in trade, wrote about his experiences with her, and other craft he commanded in several books.

This model was built by Mick Martin, and won an award at the Model Engineering Exhibition. The hull is of wooden plank construction.

She is depicted with a cargo of coal, as the barge was involved in supplying several gas works in the South East of England with coal from Keadby. She is a typical coasting barge built to carry large cargoes over long coastal journeys. Her large size and full bowsprit rig meant that she would often carry an additional member of crew - 3rd hand - to help sail her.
