Southend-on-Sea Sailing Barge Match
Celebrate
with us the 50th Southend Barge Match
Match Date: Sunday August 26th 2013
Sailing barge races have been part of the Regatta scene at Southend
for many years.
These classic sailing vessels once played a vital role in the distribution
of all types of cargo round the East Coast, before being superceded
by rail and road transport. Thnaks to the work and dedication of the
owners and crew who have lovingly restored the surviving examples of
this craft, the interest in barge racing was revived in 1964 as part
of the celebrations
With the renewed interest in barge racing, once these fine vessels ceased
their tradional cargo carrying role, and have been lvoingly restored
and maintaiined by enthusiastic owners and crew, the current series
of Barge matches at Southend was set up in 1964 as part of the celebrations
to coincide with Southend's Jubillee celebrations
The 2013 Southend Barge Match will be sailed on Sunday August 25th,
with the first start schduled for 1000.
Pier Train services start at 0830 for spectators who wish to arrive
in time for the start.
