Southend Barge Match
Saturday 29th August
A
warm welcome to the 46th Southend-on-Sea Sailing Barge Match, part of the
Southend Festival of the Sea.
This event in Southend-on-Sea
has a history going back many years, and it is a delight that we can still enjoy
the spectacle of these graceful craft, many over 100 years old, still sailing.
The unique features of Southend-on-Sea Pier, the longest in the world, gives
one of the best vantage points for viewing and photographing these fascinating
sailing craft as they compete against each other, relying on the elements of
wind and tide as the crews test their skills.
We are pleased to welcome the Tall Ship Artemis who joins us at the pier head
and will be available for people to visit –see advert.
This is my first year a Chairman of the Southend-on-Sea Barge Match Committee,
and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Grant Littler the previous
chairman, for all his hard work over many years. I would also like to thank
the rest of the Committee for their support, enthusiasm and hard work, the barge
owners and crews for making this such an enjoyable event, and our sponsors and
advertisers who help to ensure this event takes place.
We are grateful that our Patron, The Mayor of Southend-on-Sea Brian Smith will
be supporting this event by starting the race and presenting the prizes.
Many thanks to the Alexandra Yacht Club for hosting the prizegiving, to which
you are all welcome.
For further information and to get confirmation of the results see www.thamesbarge.org.uk/southendbargematch.
We also extend our
warmest thanks for the support of the Pier staff and the crew of the Alex White
acting as Committee boat.
We hope for good
weather and exciting sailing. Don’t forget your camera
